Bobbie Gentry may not be a name you are familar with but for us "older folk" we know she was a "groundbreaker" in the music industry!! One of the first females to compose AND produce her own material, gained notiriety with her HUGE hit "Ode To Billie Joe" from 1967. The, at the time, "controversial" narrative song written and recorded by Gentry helped her achieve crossover and Interantional success. It charted on Country, Pop, R&B, Canadian UK charts) In 2001, Rolling Stone magazine listed it among the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time and I agree!!!
Bobbie went on to release more songs after that but was never able to reach the success of her breakthrough hit. In the early 80's decided the leave the "business". In a 2016 article, a Washington Post reporter indicated "she currently lives a private life about a two-hour drive from the site of the Tallahatchie River bridge that made her famous."
Happy Birthday Bobbie Gentry and THANK YOU For sharing your talent with us!!!
And Oh yeah, Bobbie did this song too that was only a "minimal" hit (went to 26 on the charts in 1969) but was a BIG hit for Reba McEntire in 1991
