Texas is a football state. If you don't believe me just watch Friday Night Lights. It definitely offers insight to just how serious we take our high school football. The film depicted a team in Odessa but it could have been about any Texas High School team on any given Friday night including those here in Southeast Texas. Once a year two Texas high school football teams, the Nederland Bulldogs and the Port Neches Groves Indians, take to the field to battle it out for bragging rights and the coveted Bum Phillips Trophy which now sits at Nederland High School after edging out PNG at their last meeting 36-35 (I was there and it was MADNESS)

So the two teams face off again in the time honored tradition this Friday night (11/9) and Nederland goes in 6-0 in District (Undefeated overall 9-0) and Port Neches Groves 5-1 in District (6-3 overall) but as past match-ups have proven, stats don't really mean much when these two teams meet. It's more than a game, it's a rich tradition that divides, yet oddly unites, the communities in which the schools are located.
