Miranda Lambert shared why “it worked out really well” to collaborate with Kacey Musgraves after ending a years-long feud.

Lambert is featured on “Horses and Divorces,” a duet that appeared on Musgraves’ sixth studio record, Middle of Nowhere, earlier this year. The two Texas-born country artists wrote the unexpected collaboration with Shane McAnally. Musgraves previously opened up about the song — and the former feud — with Variety, saying, “oh, there was [real beef between Lambert and Musgraves]. It was grass-fed, grade A.”

Lambert spoke about her duet with Musgraves in a new interview with Southern Living for the publication’s November 2026 cover story. In a story published online on Monday morning (October 5), Lambert said, “it worked out really well, because we got to air out some things we needed to say to each other while writing this song about coming back together, which was really cool. And I love the way it turned out. To me, it feels a little like Willie and Waylon.

“Country music always has stages and phases and ups and downs, but I haven’t seen this many women winning since probably the 1990s,” she said in the interview of female artists thriving in the genre. “When I say ‘winning,’ I don’t mean awards. I mean just being out there doing the damn thing. It’s really good to see. I know what that takes, so I respect it a lot and am thankful to be part of it.”

Lambert, the most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history, caught up with Southern Living as she reflects on her 10th solo studio album. Crisco made its debut on Friday (October 2), incorporating Lambert’s country and disco influences and inspirations spanning decades. The 12-track record includes “Snakeskin Boots” with Ella Langley, “Two Things Can Be True,” “Till The Going’s Gone,” “A Song To Sing” with Chris Stapleton, “Sunset Marquis” and more.

“I always get weird when records come out, because it’s your heart on a page. I don’t feel worried about this one, because I never really set out to have any expectation for it except to enjoy it. I think that’s a good place to be,” Lambert told Southern Living. She said of trusting her creative process, “it came easily. Anytime the universe is pointing to something, I try to listen.”

Lambert celebrated Crisco with a One Night Only performance at a new venue in Nashville on Thursday night (October 1). She took the stage with career-spanning hits and new songs from the record, and surprised the crowd with Stapleton to perform “A Song To Sing.”

“I’ve made a lot of records with a lot of heavy subjects over the years,” Lambert reflected in a statement. “This album feels mostly lighthearted. It’s refreshing to get up on stage and sing something fun. Making this record also unlocked a ‘time to do whatever I want’ feeling. Being able to create freely without putting parameters around my art has been really, really fun. I don't think I've ever smiled that much in the studio.

“I hope when people listen to Crisco, it feels familiar while also feeling fresh,” the Grammy-winning country star added. “They can grab onto something that feels nostalgic, put their roller skates on and go on the journey with us.”
